New details from industry insiders suggest that a PlayStation 5 remake of the FromSoftware classic was in active discussion before Sony shifted its focus.
For years, Bloodborne fans have pleaded for a 60 FPS patch or a full-scale remake. According to a recent deep-dive report, those fans weren’t just dreaming, a Bloodborne Remake was reportedly on the table at Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the acclaimed Demon’s Souls (2020) and Shadow of the Colossus (2018).
The project that almost was
The report indicates that following the success of Demon’s Souls as a PS5 launch title, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) began internal talks to give Bloodborne the same “prestige” treatment. Bluepoint Games allegedly conducted technical feasibility tests on the original 2015 code to see how it would translate to their proprietary engine.
However, the project never moved into full production. Sources cite two primary reasons for the stall:
- FromSoftware’s Involvement: Unlike Demon’s Souls, which FromSoftware was comfortable letting another studio handle, the Japanese developer reportedly wanted a more hands-on role in any Bloodborne return, a difficult task given their immense workload on Elden Ring and its subsequent expansions.
- Original Content Focus: Bluepoint Games expressed a strong desire to move away from being labeled a “remake studio” and instead focus on developing their own original intellectual property, which Sony ultimately approved.
The “60 FPS” technical hurdle
A recurring point in the report is the technical complexity of the original game. Bloodborne’s engine ties many of its animations and physics directly to its 30 FPS frame rate. A simple patch isn’t enough; it requires a deep reconstruction of the game’s logic. This explains why Sony has been hesitant to release a “Pro” patch, as it would require significant engineering resources that were diverted to other titles.
What lies ahead?
While the Bluepoint remake is currently “on ice,” the report isn’t entirely bleak. The massive commercial success of Elden Ring has shown Sony the undeniable value of the “Soulsborne” genre. While a remake isn’t currently in active development for the 2026 calendar year, the IP remains one of PlayStation’s most valuable assets.
