Call of Duty: Black Ops and its sequel, Black Ops 2, are officially coming to the PlayStation 5. Considered some of the most influential entries in the entire franchise, the two classic titles, originally released between 2010 and 2012—will be re-released with updated visuals and renewed servers.
Call of Duty Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to be re-released
The official announcement was made on X last Wednesday (17). Treyarch confirmed that the adaptation is being handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio that previously collaborated with Activision on the development of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4.
While the return of these fan-favorite titles has been confirmed, the companies have not yet revealed a specific release date or the pricing for the games.
Classic campaigns, multiplayer, and zombies return
The re-releases will include all core components of the original experiences, featuring the classic single-player campaigns, traditional multiplayer lobbies, and the cooperative Zombies mode.
Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
As the seventh main title in the franchise, Black Ops solidified Treyarch as a core pillar of the series.
The Story: Set during the 1960s, the narrative follows CIA operator Alex Mason as he tracks Soviet agents attempting to launch a massive chemical attack against the United States. The plot stood out for its twists and themes of mind control and manipulation.
The Modes: Along with a highly praised multiplayer component, it featured a Zombies mode with maps inspired by different historical eras.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012)
The sequel splits its narrative across two distinct eras.
The 1980s: Follows the return of Alex Mason working alongside Frank Woods.
The Year 2025: Shifts perspective to David Mason (Alex’s son) as he hunts the global terrorist Raul Menendez across the world.
Community divided over PS5 exclusivity
While PlayStation 5 owners celebrated the announcement, the decision to focus exclusively on Sony’s platform has drawn criticism from the wider Call of Duty community. Given the massive global popularity of both titles, many players find the single-platform focus unusual.
The Xbox and PC Situation: Technically, both games remain playable on PC (via Steam) and Xbox Series X|S (via backward compatibility).
The Hacker Problem: The community highlights that the existing versions on PC and Xbox are highly problematic, as their servers have been completely dominated by hackers and cheaters for years.
Fans argue that a multi-platform re-release—or at least a revitalization of the servers and anti-cheat software on Xbox and PC—would greatly benefit players across all ecosystems. Up to this point, neither Treyarch nor Iron Galaxy have provided an explanation as to why the project is strictly focusing on the PS5.
