Capcom aims to release one ‘Resident Evil’ game per year to fund experimental projects

The ongoing success of Resident Evil is enabling Capcom to continue investing in more experimental games. Since the franchise debuted in 1996, Resident Evil has never experienced a gap longer than two years between releases and Capcom aims to keep it that way, given how recent entries have helped create a new “golden age” for the company.

In an interview with Game Informer, Onimusha: Way of the Sword producer Masachika Kawata stated that Capcom’s goal is to release at least one survival horror title every year by alternating between brand-new installments, DLCs, and remakes of past stories.

“Being able to revisit older games and remake them helps Capcom meet the goal of releasing a Resident Evil title each year,” Kawata explained. “But it also allows the team to continually challenge themselves and hone their skills. And that doesn’t make remakes any less important. In fact, they’re just as important as the mainline titles. Capcom is lucky to have found this cycle.”

Funding experimental games and new bets

Kawata explained that Resident Evil‘s sustained commercial success provides Capcom the luxury of betting on more experimental projects.

  • Pragmata: Kawata cited Pragmata as a title that exists specifically because the developer possesses an established, highly profitable franchise capable of keeping the company operational even if a new experiment fails.
  • Measured Approach: Despite its current success, Kawata clarified that Capcom is not “swimming in money.” As a result, fans should not expect the studio to develop multiple Resident Evil spin-offs or brand-new franchises simultaneously.
  • Balanced Strategy: Capcom intends to prioritize sequels to established, high-performing games while continuing to make selective bets on other intellectual properties. Recent releases such as Exoprimal and Kunitsu-Gami—even if not always sales hits, demonstrate the publisher’s commitment to testing new concepts.

The next ‘Resident Evil’ release

The next installment Capcom is preparing for its survival horror franchise is Veronica, a remake of Code: Veronica (which originally debuted on the Dreamcast).

  • Target Window: Scheduled for release in 2027.
  • Launch Date: A specific release date has not yet been set.
