Diablo IV season 15 introduces character Rebirth, Soul Shards, and new challenges

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that Public Test Realm (PTR) version 3.2.0 for Diablo IV will run from August 4 to August 11. The test period allows players to preview upcoming Season 15 features, including Soul Shards, Character Rebirth, Legacy Uniques, Challenge Dungeons, and the Horadric Mail.

While several major mechanics are featured in the PTR, Blizzard noted that part of the upcoming seasonal content will remain secret until it is officially showcased at BlizzCon.

Soul Shards Bring high-risk powers to builds

Season 15 introduces Soul Shards, a new socketable item type designed to offer powerful stat boosts in exchange for notable penalties.

  • Rarities: Soul Shards arrive in five rarity tiers—Common, Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique.
  • Upgrades: Players can upgrade Soul Shards using the Horadric Cube.
  • Stat Bonuses: Effects include increased critical hit chance, faster attack speed, maximum health boosts, bonus damage, damage reduction, extra gold/materials/experience gain, and empowerment based on collected souls.
  • Trade-offs: Every positive effect comes with a disadvantage, such as increased resource costs, reduced movement speed, or lower critical hit chances.

Challenge dungeons and terrestrial ambushes

Exploration in the open world becomes more dangerous with two new combat encounters:

  • Challenge Dungeons: Special portals placed across the map lead players directly to powerful boss fights. On Torment difficulties, players can face harder versions of these enemies for higher-tier rewards. (Blizzard noted that PTR encounters are for testing mechanics only and will differ in the final release.)
  • Terrestrial Ambush: While exploring the open world, a demon has a small chance to target the character for a hunt. Players will have 30 seconds to either escape or face the enemy in what Blizzard describes as an extremely difficult battle.

Classic gear returns as legacy uniques

Blizzard is bringing back iconic equipment from Diablo, Diablo II, and Diablo III, updated to fit Diablo IV attribute systems. Legacy Uniques will remain available permanently after Season 15 arrives.

Confirmed returning items include:

  • Leoric’s Crown
  • Stone of Jordan
  • Nemesis Bracers
  • The Furnace
  • In-Geom
  • Arioc’s Needle

Overhauled mythic item crafting

The creation of Mythic Uniques has been revamped to offer two distinct crafting paths:

  1. Horadric Cube: Directly converts an item into its Mythic version while preserving its existing stats.
  2. Jeweler: Crafts a random Mythic Unique compatible with the player’s chosen class.

Additionally, all Iconic Mythics will now feature common versions to make them easier to acquire during character progression. The update also adds Unique Amulets and Mythic Unique Amulets to further expand build customization.

Character rebirth and Horadric Mail

Season 15 addresses long-standing community requests with two major quality-of-life systems:

  • Character Rebirth: Players can now convert a character from the Eternal Realm into a Seasonal character. The process resets the character to Level 1 while retaining their class, name, appearance, cosmetics, mounts, pets, and tracked playtime history. (Note: Players must remove all equipment and inventory items prior to rebirth to avoid permanent loss.)
  • Horadric Mail: A new system allowing Blizzard to deliver rewards directly to players, including event messages, commemorative items, supplies, and special event bonuses. PTR participants will receive specific items through the mail to test the system’s functionality.

PTR access details

The 3.2.0 PTR will be available exclusively via the Battle.net launcher client between August 4 and August 11.

During the testing period, players can interact with a special vendor offering materials, gear, levels, glyphs, and resources to quickly test all incoming features. Blizzard plans to use community feedback from the test to address balance, fix bugs, and refine systems ahead of the full release of Season 15.
