Doom: The Dark Ages to get darker and more intense in ‘Revelations’ expansion

Following an exclusive preview provided by id Software, new details have been revealed for Revelations, the upcoming expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages. The content promises to show an unglamorous, unseen side of the story, forcing a defeated Doomslayer with shattered armor to reclaim his lost strength.

Gameplay, story, and the new ‘Chain Spear’

Id Software’s core goal with Revelations is to firmly re-establish the protagonist as a terrifying war machine, inverting traditional shooter logic so that enemies fear the player rather than the other way around.

The Chain Spear (Chain Lance)

A brand-new weapon known as the Chain Spear (also referred to as the Chain Lance) completely alters the combat rules.

  • Dynamic Swapping: Equipped on the protagonist’s left arm, players can dynamically alternate between the new weapon and the returning Saw Shield (Serraescudo).
  • Progression: The weapon starts relatively weak, but players can level it up and unlock upgrades to turn it into an iconic tool.
  • Combat Mechanics: It can be used to strike targets at a distance, deflect enemy projectiles, and unleash a massive wave of damage, significantly boosting the Doomslayer’s agility and mobility.

Narrative scope

The new campaign offers 10 to 12 hours of gameplay (depending on the chosen difficulty) and dives deep into the franchise’s expanded universe. Creative Director Hugo Martin and Director Marty Stratton confirmed that the story features no retcons, ensuring a satisfying narrative for lore enthusiasts.

An intense endgame breakdown

Endgame content makes up roughly 40% of the new material introduced in the expansion. Alongside the armor reinforcement system, players will face new enemy types that add complexity to id Software’s tactical combat loop.

Finishing the campaign unlocks the Master Phase difficulty for the main story, alongside three new game modes:

  • Praetor Suit (Traje Pretor): Challenge arenas featuring heavily accentuated difficulty.
  • Slayer Trials (Provações do Slayer): Score-based arcade stages.
  • Classic Levels (Fases clássicas): Re-engineered stages from previous games in the franchise, fully rebuilt inside the Doom: The Dark Ages engine.

The Ultimate Challenge: Completing these modes awards players the Astral Key, which grants access to the Supreme Boss. Defeating this boss unlocks the Master Arenas—ultra-intense zones packed with enemies where the fully upgraded lance can showcase its true potential, offering robust content for 100% completionists.

Infinite arena update

The game’s endless arena mode, Estripatório, will receive a full update integrating all elements from Revelations. It will also introduce new pre-determined presets for quick-play sessions, though manual rule customization will remain fully available.

New levels and release information

The expansion features 6 additional campaign levels designed for aggressive, high-intensity combat:

  1. Proving Grounds
  2. Purgatory (Hub Level)
  3. Hell’s Core
  4. Chasm of Xal’Goroth
  5. Osseus
  6. Uprising

Launch Details

  • Official Release Date: July 7
  • Scale: Deemed the most extensive expansion in the entire history of id Software.
  • Availability: Included as part of the Doom: The Dark Ages Premium Edition, or accessible via the Premium Upgrade for players who only own the base game.
