Double Fine retains Psychonauts and other IPs following Xbox departure

Double Fine Productions has secured full ownership and publishing rights to its entire past catalog—including Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Costume Quest—following its recent purchase of independence from Xbox. To help finance its next steps, the studio is launching a Kickstarter campaign tied to an internal game jam.

IP Rrights and revenue transfer

  • Full Catalog Ownership: Double Fine retains the intellectual property rights to all games it has produced, including Psychonauts, Kiln, Keeper, Costume Quest, Brutal Legend, and various other projects.
  • Direct Revenue: Microsoft will transfer all publishing rights back to the studio. Consequently, sales revenue from these titles will now go directly to Double Fine rather than its former parent company.
  • Transition Process: Speaking on the Kinda Funny Daily podcast, Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer confirmed the transfer, explaining:”It’s still going to say ‘Microsoft’ on some of them, but that’s because it takes some time to process. When people buy our games, they support the studio.”

Amnesia Fortnite event and crowdfunding plans

  • Internal Game Jam: Double Fine is hosting a new edition of Amnesia Fortnite, an internal game jam aimed at discovering new project concepts. The event begins on August 31 and runs through September.
  • Public Prototypes: The public will be able to follow the creation of four prototypes developed live. Out of these four, only one prototype will be selected to become a full game.
  • Kickstarter Funding: The winning game concept will be developed using public crowdfunding via Kickstarter. While the campaign page is already live, financial targets and reward tiers have not yet been disclosed.
  • Documentary Coverage: Production company 2 Player Productions will film the entire creation process and turn it into a new documentary.
  • Crowdfunding History: Double Fine previously used Kickstarter to fund Broken Age and later raised $3.3 million on Fig to produce Psychonauts 2.
