Ex-EA analyst questions future of Mass Effect following EA privatization

Following a regulatory process, Electronic Arts has returned to being a fully private company owned by Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund. While new management has yet to outline long-term plans, former EA senior intelligence analyst Emmanuel Rosier warns that the Mass Effect franchise and developer BioWare could face cancellation, sale, or restructuring.

Risk of cancellation and IP sales

Speaking to PC Gamer, Rosier—who spent nine years at EA before joining Newzoo—noted that while sports franchises will remain EA’s central focus, second- and third-tier properties face significant risk under new ownership:

  • Potential Cancellation: Rosier stated he will only believe in a new Mass Effect when he sees it, noting that BioWare frequently goes years without delivering concrete output. He added that new investors without emotional attachment to EA’s portfolio history are likely to make financial decisions that could easily result in project cancellations.
  • Asset Sales: The new management could decide to sell off Mass Effect or BioWare as a whole. Dormant IPs with remaining market value, such as Wing Commander and Ultima, could also be put up for sale.
  • Third-Party Outsourcing: For franchises EA decides to keep, the company may explore placing development into the hands of third-party studios.

Financial pressure and BioWare’s Status

  • Acquisition Debt: The new owners are under heavy financial pressure to service a multi-billion-dollar loan taken out to enable the buyout of EA.
  • Development Silence: BioWare last spoke publicly about the next Mass Effect in November 2023, when it released a teaser trailer. Since then, the studio has remained silent, stating it wants to focus all its energy and attention on development.
