Playground Games dropped an absolute megaton trailer for Fable at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 7. The extensive update formally introduced Marvel star Hayley Atwell as the game’s complex antagonist, showcased brand-new gameplay mechanics, and stunned the industry by confirming a day-and-date release on the PlayStation 5.
Fable
Following its recent internal delay to navigate around the late-2026 release window of Grand Theft Auto VI, the highly anticipated RPG has officially locked in its worldwide release date for February 23, 2027.
The centerpiece of the new trailer is Isabel, portrayed by Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger). While she loudly proclaims to be the absolute savior that the realm of Albion needs, her methods and monologues carry a deeply sinister undertone.
Narrative Director Craig Owens detailed her complex psychological background:
“Isabel is an incredibly powerful hero driven by immense grief on a crusade to right a tragic injustice. She is entirely convinced that the end justifies the means, believing she can retroactively undo any evil she commits along the way.”
This rigid, dangerous self-righteousness puts her in direct opposition to the player’s protagonist and her former guardian, Humphry (played by Matt King). Once celebrated as Albion’s greatest defender, Humphry now lives out his days locked away in the abandoned, hollow halls of the Heroes’ Guild.
Gameplay: Balverines and absurd magic
The cinematic and gameplay footage highlights the signature British wit and dark fantasy atmosphere that defined Lionhead Studios’ original trilogy, backed by Playground Games’ technical prowess:
Visceral Combat: The trailer treated fans to a frantic, high-stakes battle against a terrifying, redesigned Balverine (Albion’s iconic werewolf threat).
Classic Fable Humor: Showing off the game’s sandbox magic system, the protagonist is seen casting a whimsical spell to effortlessly flip a colossal, aggressive giant toad onto its back.
The Return of a Legend? The closing seconds of the footage heavily teased the return of Jack of Blades, the iconic masked antagonist of the original 2004 game. Because the character famously wears a mask that transfers his spirit, it remains to be seen if this is the original entity or someone new claiming the mantle.

Shaping your hero
Players will begin their journey in the isolated, forested village of Briar Hill. The main character’s voice and performance will be handled by Lily Nichol (in her video game debut) and Ukweli Roach (Horizon Forbidden West). Morality will adapt entirely to player choices, giving you the freedom to evolve into a noble savior or a tyrannical, physically corrupted villain.
The struggle for Albion will also take players to the dangerous, defiant city of Bloodstone, where siblings Jenny and Jacob are locked in a vicious family feud for control. Narrative Director Craig Owens noted that Jenny perfectly embodies Bloodstone itself: “brutal, coarse, proud, and dangerous. If Jenny gets what she wants, the city will remain that way forever.”
