Square Enix is finally bringing its mainline universe into the gorgeous, nostalgic world of HD-2D. Following the massive critical success of the visual style in franchises like Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest, the publisher has officially unveiled Final Fantasy Resonance—a turn-based RPG designed to capture the magic of the series’ 1980s and 1990s golden era.
Final Fantasy Resonance.
Scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026, Final Fantasy Resonance serves as a ground-up premium reinterpretation of the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which was completely discontinued in October 2025. Rather than a simple port, Square Enix is entirely rebuilding and reimagining the experience for consoles and PC.
Back to the roots: crystals, airships, and strategy
The narrative of Resonance returns to classic, high-fantasy tropes that veteran fans have been begging for.
The Plot: The world is threatened by a mysterious, malevolent dark warrior hellbent on destroying the realm’s magical crystals. Players will step into the armor of Rain, a dedicated knight of the kingdom, who must embark on a continent-spanning quest to prevent total catastrophe.
Classic Tropes: Square Enix has promised the return of classic hallmark features, including massive imperial airships, powerful summons, and plenty of Moogles and Chocobos.
Tactical Combat: The gameplay discards action-heavy mechanics in favor of a deep, tactical turn-based battle system. Success in combat relies entirely on identifying, exposing, and exploiting enemy elemental weaknesses.
The ‘VISIONS’ system: summoning legendary icons
True to its Brave Exvius roots, the game features a massive crossover mechanic known as the VISIONS system. This allows Rain to pull spirits of legendary heroes from across time and space into battle.
The debut trailer confirmed that players will be able to summon iconic franchise protagonists to unleash catastrophic attacks, easily breaking into devastating four-digit damage numbers. Confirmed legends include:
Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)
Noctis Lucis Caelum (Final Fantasy XV)
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII)
The Hero of Light (Final Fantasy I)
A symphonic rebirth
To ensure the game feels like a prestige console release, the audio presentation has been significantly upgraded. Alongside remastered arrangements of the original mobile score, the game will feature 33 brand-new, completely original tracks.
The new music is composed and recorded by the renowned symphonic anime and gaming music collective Elements Garden, under the direct leadership of legendary composer Noriyasu Agematsu.
Launch date and available platforms
Final Fantasy Resonance will avoid platform exclusivity entirely, launching simultaneously across old-school, current-gen, and next-gen ecosystems right before the holiday rush.
