Game of Thrones: War for Westeros resurfaces with updates, but won’t arrive until 2027

The strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will need extra time in the oven to ensure the quality of its combat mechanics. First announced during Summer Game Fest 2026, the game received fresh news late last week following a long period of silence. However, the update is a mixed bag for fans: while development is progressing well, the title will now only arrive in 2027.

Dedicated focus on RTS combat systems

Posting on Steam, developer PlaySide explained that it requires additional development time to dedicate to the combat between its playable factions.

Like other real-time strategy (RTS) games, players will command both standard units and hero units:

  • Hero Units: Equipped with unique abilities capable of turning the tide of battle, along with the ability to level up.
  • Massive Scale: The studio aims to make players truly feel the weight of commanding massive armies. To achieve this, substantial development time is being spent on refining pathfinding and impact-detection systems during combat.
  • Tactical Counters: Units operate on a advantage-disadvantage system against one another. Numerical superiority alone will not guarantee a win, as smart planning can trigger a devastating counterattack to swing a battle’s momentum.

Four iconic launch factions

PlaySide confirmed that at launch, the game will feature four highly recognizable factions from the universe:

  1. House Stark
  2. House Lannister
  3. House Targaryen
  4. The Armies of the Dead (led by the Night King, who resides beyond the great northern wall)

Beyond HBO series nostalgia

The developer stated it will not settle for simply being faithful to the HBO show or relying on the popularity of its heroes to win over the audience. The goal is to respect the source material while delivering a standalone strategy game that can succeed on its own merits.

On Steam, the creators thanked fans for their support and requested patience as they work to complete the project. While Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is now planned for a 2027 release, a more specific premiere window has not yet been shared.
