God of War Laufey rumored for early 2027 release, keeping up franchise tradition

Sony Santa Monica’s newly unveiled spin-off/midquel, God of War Laufey, might be arriving much sooner than fans anticipate. Despite receiving a substantial reveal trailer at the June 2026 State of Play without an official launch window, prominent industry insiders report that the game is in an advanced stage of development and targeting a release in the first half of 2027.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier on the Triple Click podcast, production on the title is well underway, meaning players won’t face a agonizingly long wait. This sentiment was echoed by insider NateTheHate on X (formerly Twitter), who noted that the internal target is early 2027. Sony likely withheld the date to keep the spotlight on its holiday 2026 heavy-hitters, such as Marvel’s Wolverine.

Welcome to ‘The Everywhen’: a godly afterlife

God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight to Kratos’ late wife and formidable Guardian of the Jötnar—Laufey (Faye), voiced once again by Deborah Ann Woll.

The story takes place concurrently with the events of the 2018 God of War reboot. Immediately following her funeral pyre, Faye awakens in The Everywhen—a mystical afterlife realm where fallen gods and mythological entities from across various pantheons are sent after death to vie for ultimate control. To safeguard the future of Kratos and Atreus, Faye must slash her way through this cosmic battleground alongside new companions, including a cosmic cube named Phranque (voiced by Jack Quaid) and a sentient sword named Rue.

Gameplay: “chocolate and peanut butter” fusion

Game Director Ariel Lawrence explained that Laufey will serve as a bridge between the two distinct eras of the franchise, blending the mechanical philosophies of both the Greek and Norse sagas:

“I learned to play God of War with the very first game… juggling enemies, chaining high-speed aerial combos, and having dynamic movement options. But I also love the visceral, close-quarters combat of the Norse games. It’s a ‘can I have chocolate and peanut butter together?’ moment. Faye is the perfect protagonist to bridge that gap.”

Players can expect a much faster, high-flying, arcade-inspired hack-and-slash rhythm that channels the PS2/PS3 era, while maintaining the cinematic storytelling and emotional weight of the modern games.

Chronology: the traditional March launch window

An early 2027 release would align perfectly with Santa Monica Studio’s historical preference for launching its flagship games in March. Historically, the majority of God of War titles have targeted the first quarter of the year.

Game TitleOriginal Launch DateRelease Window
God of WarMarch 22, 2005Q1
God of War IIMarch 13, 2007Q1
God of War: Chains of OlympusMarch 4, 2008Q1
God of War IIIMarch 16, 2010Q1
God of War: AscensionMarch 12, 2013Q1
God of War Laufey (Projected)March 2027Q1

Exceptions to the rule include Ghost of Sparta (November 2010), the 2018 reboot (April), and Ragnarök (November 2022).

Bolstering Sony’s first-party lineup

A Q1 2027 release window would act as a massive win for Sony’s PlayStation 5 lineup. While third-party projects like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet are on the horizon, Naughty Dog’s next major project remains tightly under wraps, leaving a slot open for a premium, heavy-hitting first-party exclusive to anchor the first half of 2027.

Although Take-Two Interactive has already set the price of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) at $80, some market analysts are openly dissatisfied with the decision.
