GTA 6 pre-orders alone could cover entire game production costs

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6)—already described as unprecedented by publisher Take-Two Interactive—may have already recovered the game’s primary production costs, according to market tracking firm Sensor Tower.

Estimated 25 million units sold

According to estimates from Karl Kontus, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sensor Tower’s gaming department, approximately 25 million units of the Rockstar Games title have already been sold during its pre-order period.

If these estimates hold, developer Rockstar Games has achieved the most successful pre-release in gaming history.

  • Official Stance: Take-Two Interactive has not officially attached specific sales figures to the game’s performance.
  • Executive Feedback: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed to shareholders that the title is performing exceptionally well and exceeding all previous expectations.

$2 billion revenue estimate and development budget

Kontus notes that if his calculations are correct, Take-Two Interactive has generated $2 billion in revenue from GTA 6 pre-orders alone. This total would be enough to cover:

  • The game’s full production costs
  • The majority of the funds allocated to its marketing campaign

Until official figures are published, these numbers remain imprecise estimates. However, given its extended development timeline and the size of the teams involved, GTA 6 is widely expected to be one of the highest-budget video games ever made.

August 27 Netflix showcase

According to Sensor Tower’s Senior Vice President, the true scope of GTA 6 will become clearer to the public on August 27.

On that date, a special presentation with temporary exclusivity will air on Netflix, promising to reveal gameplay details and showcase several new features coming to the game.
