Halo: Campaign evolved requires Microsoft Account and Xbox Gamertag on PC and PS5

The upcoming remake of the original game, Halo: Campaign Evolved, will mark the iconic Xbox first-person shooter franchise’s debut on the PlayStation 5. However, Microsoft has confirmed that all players—regardless of their platform—will be strictly required to have a Microsoft account and an Xbox Gamertag.

This requirement applies to players on Steam (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, mirroring the account systems already present in Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite.

Cross-platform features and local co-op restrictions

According to an official Q&A posted on the game’s website, the account link is essential for unifying the player base across different systems.

“Just as you do now in Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite, to ensure smooth cross-platform progress, to play Halo: Campaign Evolved you will need a Microsoft account and an Xbox Gamertag, regardless of the platform you play on,” the official text states. “This allows for both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression.”

Mandated even for offline and local play

  • No Opt-Out: The Microsoft account remains mandatory even for users who have no intention of using cross-play or cross-progression features.
  • Local Co-Op Rules: For local split-screen co-op, every single participant must have their own individual Microsoft account.
  • PlayStation 5 Specifics: On the PS5, each local player must log into their own unique PlayStation Network (PSN) profile, and each of those profiles must be individually linked to a separate Microsoft account.

Official site corrects “local PS Plus” error

To play the game’s online multiplayer mode, console users will need a paid subscription service: Xbox Game Pass for Xbox players and PlayStation Plus for PS5 players.

However, the initial publication of the official Q&A caused a brief scare within the community due to a developer error regarding offline play.

  • The Mistake: The original text incorrectly stated that an active PlayStation Plus subscription would be required even for local, split-screen co-op.
  • The Correction: On June 20, the developers updated the post to clear up the confusion. The text now categorically states that PlayStation Plus is not required for local co-op with friends, though the mandatory Microsoft account requirement remains completely unchanged.
