Haunted Chocolatier: Stardew Valley Creator Shares Update on Long Development

If you are eagerly anticipating Haunted Chocolatier, the next game from Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, you should know that the developer himself shares your anxiety. In a new official blog post, the creator of the global phenomenon Stardew Valley admitted that the game is “taking a long time” and revealed some regret over announcing the project as early as he did.

Originally revealed in 2021 — with development actually starting in 2020 —, the title has now been in production for five years with no official release date in sight.

Here is a breakdown of the key details shared by the developer regarding the game’s progress and the future of Stardew Valley.

The Pursuit of “Perfection” Explains the Delay

According to Barone, the reason development has stretched past the five-year mark is his constant process of iterating and refining the game’s numerous core systems. For him, the elements that players interact with most frequently must be absolutely flawless.

  • Seamless Systems: “The things in the game which the player will be interacting with or using very often need to be ‘perfect.’ They need to be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic,” the developer explained.
  • The Recipe Book: As a practical example, he highlighted the user interface (UI) for the chocolate-making recipe book. Barone revealed he has been tweaking minuscule details, such as how many clicks it takes to navigate the interface and the exact type of information displayed.
  • More Than Just Comfort: The creator’s ultimate goal goes beyond making a functional and pretty UI: “I want more than just comfort. I want to delight the player,” he stated.

What to Expect from Haunted Chocolatier?

While it retains the beloved top-down pixel art style characteristic of its predecessor, the new title will introduce vastly different core dynamics:

  • Action-RPG Focus: The game is described as “more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley,” indicating that combat will have a much heavier focus in the overall gameplay loop.
  • A New Theme: Instead of inheriting and restoring a farm, the central objective will be running and managing a chocolate shop in a haunted setting.
  • Cozy Mechanics: Classic life-sim elements, such as running a business and building relationships with the townspeople, remain a core part of the experience.

What is Happening with Stardew Valley?

Even though he is deeply focused on his new project, Eric Barone has never completely stopped working on his first massive success. The game recently crossed its 10th anniversary (having originally launched in February 2016) and still has new content on the horizon:

  • Update 1.7: The developer provided a brief insight into the massive upcoming 1.7 update which, although lacking a release date, will add two more marriage candidates to Pelican Town.
  • Future of the Franchise: Looking even further ahead, Barone noted that he has considered developing a “Stardew Classic” version as well as an official, true sequel (Stardew Valley 2) down the line.

For now, the solo developer signed off by expressing his immense gratitude to the community, stating, “As always, I really appreciate your patience.”
