Marvel’s Wolverine to run at 60 FPS with ray tracing on base PS5

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second (FPS) with ray tracing enabled as its default mode on the base PlayStation 5 console. The game will also feature widespread environment destruction, reactive vegetation, and launch-day replayability features, including New Game Plus.

60 FPS with ray tracing set as default for the first time

According to Insomniac executive Fitzgerald, ray-traced performance modes in the studio’s previous projects were typically added during late stages of development.

For Marvel’s Wolverine, the team took the opposite approach, building the game from the start to operate at 60 FPS with ray tracing on the base PS5:

  • Hardware Vision: The team built the title around the premise that this level of performance represents how the PS5 should function.
  • Studio Milestone: Setting a ray-tracing mode as the default option marks a first for Insomniac Games, with Fitzgerald emphasizing its importance to the game’s overall presentation.

Wilderness settings shift technical priorities

Unlike Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was set within a single city, Marvel’s Wolverine takes the main character to the wilderness of Canada, Madripoor, and other regions.

  • Reactive Vegetation: Insomniac invested in foliage and jungle environments designed to react dynamically to character movement and wind.
  • Character-Driven Focus: Because Wolverine has a closer connection to natural environments than Peter Parker, the team directed its technical efforts toward simulating moving vegetation and environmental interaction.

Widespread object destruction and launch replayability

To reflect the protagonist’s destructive nature, the majority of in-game props and objects will be destructible, featuring physically accurate reactions.

While the announcement does not specify whether object destruction directly impacts gameplay mechanics, environments are designed to respond realistically to character actions. Furthermore, the game will include replayability features and New Game Plus directly at launch.
