METRO 2039 unveils first gameplay trailer, presenting a new villain

4A Games and Deep Silver took the stage at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 to debut the first gameplay trailer for METRO 2039, the highly anticipated fourth mainline entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise. The nearly three-minute trailer, captured entirely in-engine, confirmed a February 2027 release window for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Developed by 4A Games across their studios in Ukraine and Malta, the project features a narrative co-authored by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the creator of the original Metro novels. The gameplay marks a stark departure from the open-air exploration of 2019’s Metro Exodus, pulling players back into the claustrophobic horror of the Moscow underground.

The rise of the Novoreich: Hunter and The Stranger

The central narrative thrust of METRO 2039 revolves around a terrifying new political threat within the metro lines.

  • The Villain: Players were introduced to Hunter, a legendary former Spartan Ranger who has seized absolute power following the collapse of the metro’s independent factions. Under his iron fist, the Novoreich has emerged, an authoritarian regime that maintains absolute control over the tunnels through brutal violence and state propaganda. While Hunter publicly promises a renewed life on the surface, his faction rules through fear, swiftly eliminating anyone deemed a dissident.
  • The Protagonist: Players will step into the boots of The Stranger, a reclusive survivor plagued by violent nightmares. Forced out of exile by the ghosts of his past, he must traverse the shattered remains of Moscow to dismantle Hunter’s regime. Notably, The Stranger will be the first fully voiced protagonist in a mainline Metro title, a significant shift from the series’ traditionally silent or limited-dialogue leads.

Returning to the dark: claustrophobic stealth and the “Shatun”

After experimenting with expansive sandbox environments in Metro Exodus, 4A Games is intentionally steering the franchise back to its roots. Creative Director Andriy Shevchenko explained the structural pivot:

“We are heading back into the tunnels and embracing what makes Metro truly Metro: the intensity of the darkness, the intimacy of enclosed spaces, and the constant feeling that every step forward, every decision made, comes with a cost.”

The gameplay showcase highlighted tight, rubble-strewn corridors, subterranean mutant encounters, and the return of the franchise’s signature diegetic survival mechanics—including manual weapon maintenance to prevent jamming and tracking radiation filters via a physical wristwatch.

To aid in the shadows, the trailer introduced the Shatun, a brand-new, hand-crafted silent weapon engineered specifically for stealth takedowns. Players will also have access to micro-controlled explosive charges designed to dynamically breach walls and alter environmental pathing.

A narrative forged through real-world conflict

The development of METRO 2039 remains deeply intertwined with the ongoing geopolitical reality of its creators. 4A Games maintained active production at its Kyiv headquarters through ongoing drone strikes, utilizing backup generators and batteries to keep development servers online.

The game’s narrative was entirely rewritten following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, directly channeling the team’s firsthand experiences with authoritarianism, state-driven propaganda, and the human cost of resistance.

Co-author Dmitry Glukhovsky, who is currently working on the project from exile after being sentenced to eight years in prison by a Russian court for his anti-war stances, shared a poignant reflection on the game’s direction:

“In times of war, stories must mirror reality to record it, ensuring the lessons of these eras are never forgotten. Metro 2039 is that mirror. But, as expected with mirrors, you will see your own reflection when you look into it. Who are you?”
