Modders Get GTA V running natively on original Nintendo Switch via leaked source code

Modding group Paralympics Productions has successfully ported Grand Theft Auto V to run natively on the original Nintendo Switch hardware using a homebrew build derived from the game’s leaked 2023 source code.

Technical implementation and performance

  • Native Execution: The group reverse-engineered the leaked “Legacy” source code, recompiling the game logic for ARM architecture to run directly on the Switch’s Tegra X1 chip without using Android layers or emulation.
  • Hardware Requirements: Running the game requires a modded (unlocked) Switch with overclocking enabled.
  • Framerate Performance: At stock clock speeds, performance is poor, fluctuating between 10 and 25 FPS. Forcing the CPU, GPU, and memory beyond default limits using tools like sys-clk achieves a stable 30 FPS.
  • Storage Requirements: The complete installation occupies approximately 49 GB.

Official context and future plans

  • Lack of Official Port: Rockstar Games never released GTA V for Nintendo Switch hardware, despite the game’s initial 2013 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
  • Ongoing Development: Paralympics Productions has already released several updates for the Switch build and is reportedly working on an Android port.
