Modders run Final Fantasy VII Remake on Nintendo Switch Lite with 8GB RAM

A modified Nintendo Switch Lite, upgraded with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, has successfully run the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Remake at frame rates between 20 and 30 FPS.

This achievement, documented by the modder Naga, bypasses a historical limitation of the platform: the title never received an official port for the original Nintendo Switch, only arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2026.

The hardware behind the “Switch Lite Pro”

Naga’s project takes a standard Nintendo Switch Lite and implements several hardware overhauls:

  • Memory: Doubled the standard system RAM to 8GB.
  • Storage: Internal storage was upgraded to a 256GB eMMC module.
  • Display: The original screen was replaced with a Super5 OLED panel.

Running PC games via Box64 and Wine

Because the Nintendo Switch uses ARM architecture, running PC games (compiled for x86) requires an extra layer of processing. The system uses Box64 combined with Wine to translate these instructions in real-time.

While this translation layer imposes a performance overhead, making games run heavier than native projects, the modified Switch Lite sustained playable sessions of the PS4-era title, highlighting how increased RAM bandwidth and capacity can make “impossible” ports viable.

Multi-platform emulation

Beyond Final Fantasy VII Remake, the “Switch Lite Pro” was demonstrated running various titles across different platforms:

  • PC: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at 45 FPS.
  • PS3: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX.
  • Wii U: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.
  • PS Vita: Gravity Rush and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

The project showcases the hardware’s flexibility, as each emulated platform requires different levels of instruction translation and resource allocation.
