New ‘Beast of Reincarnation’ trailer details the game’s parry-based combat

Game Freak, the developer famously known for the Pokémon franchise, is shifting its focus to high-octane combat for its brand-new IP, Beast of Reincarnation. Departing from its traditional Nintendo-exclusive monster-catching titles, this upcoming project is a AAA action game featuring advanced graphics and a heavy emphasis on real-time combat.

While the game was initially compared to the soulslike genre upon its reveal, the developers have since clarified that this is not the case. However, its combat system is built heavily around parrying, a design choice highly reminiscent of Sekiro.

Combat mechanics: Emma and Koo

The newly released gameplay trailer demonstrates how players must study and memorize enemy attack patterns to execute precise defenses (parries). This mechanic is essential for survival and powers up the protagonist’s companion.

  • Emma: The game’s protagonist. Executing successful parries prevents Emma from taking damage.
  • Koo: Emma’s canine partner. Successful parries fill Koo’s skill points/power bar.
  • Bloom Arts: Players can spend Koo’s accumulated skill points to unleash powerful cooperative techniques called Bloom Arts.
  • Stun and Finishers: Parrying successfully fills the opponent’s stun bar. Once an enemy is fully stunned, they can be defeated instantly with a single finishing blow.

Boss battles and skill trees

The parry mechanic is so core to Beast of Reincarnation that players can even parry the violent, heavy attacks of the massive bosses encountered throughout the story.

Progression and playstyles

  • Unlocking Abilities: Defeating a boss rewards the player by unlocking a new Bloom Art.
  • Emma’s Skill Tree: The trailer offers a brief glimpse at Emma’s skill tree. According to the narrator, players will have a high degree of control over their playstyle.
  • Alternative Approaches: Players will be able to customize their builds to focus on ranged combat or stealth, though the trailer notes these specific playstyles were not showcased in the video.

Release date and platforms

  • Release Date: August 4
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S
