New ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ trailer features ninjas and classic enemies

Marvel’s Wolverine, one of the most highly anticipated PlayStation 5 exclusives for the second half of 2026, received a new cinematic trailer on Thursday, July 16. The footage offers a dramatic look at the old villains and adversaries Logan is set to encounter throughout his journey.

The trailer reveals that as a long-lived mutant, Logan has experienced a vast history of conflict and death. Over time, many of these violent memories have begun to blur together, making the few precious memories he still holds on to even more valuable.

Unlikely allies and fierce enemies

The cinematic footage outlines several key factions and characters that will shape the game’s narrative:

  • Sabretooth: In a surprising turn, Sabretooth will appear as one of Logan’s allies in the battle against the Marauders.
  • Lady Deathstrike (Yuriko Oyama): No such alliance exists with Lady Deathstrike. She acts as one of Logan’s premier adversaries, commanding a formidable army of ninjas deployed to stand in the protagonist’s way.

A unique interpretation of the mutant universe

In the original comic books, Lady Deathstrike is the daughter of Kenji Oyama, the scientist who created the process used to bond adamantium to the human body. Although she initially rejected her father’s work, Yuriko changed her mind after his death, setting out to reclaim his invention and extract the precious metal directly from Wolverine’s bones.

While the game’s trailer suggests she shares a similar goal, developer Insomniac Games is introducing its own distinct interpretation of the mutant universe, meaning her motives may not mirror the comics exactly.

The game’s world state:

  • The X-Men Do Not Exist: In this universe, the iconic superhero team does not exist. This absence leaves people across the globe who manifest special powers in extreme danger.
  • Government Task Force: In this harsh environment, Logan leads a specialized task force dedicated to liberating mutant prisoners who are being held by the government for dark purposes.
  • A Link to the Past: Amidst the chaos, Wolverine will fight to preserve a fragment of his past, which involves a female figure who closely resembles Jean Grey.

Release details and physical media

  • Platform: PlayStation 5 (Exclusive)
  • Release Date: September 15, 2026
  • Physical Version Note: This title will be one of Sony’s final first-party releases to receive a physical disc version.
