Simultaneously with its announcement to end the production of physical media by 2028, Sony is already preparing to adjust costs for users who embrace its digital ecosystem. During a shareholder meeting held in late June, the company confirmed it has active plans to implement new price adjustments for PlayStation Plus.
New PlayStation Plus price hikes
The corporate event featured presentations from President and CEO Hideaki Nishino, Studio CEO Hermen Hulst, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar. The executives stated that they continuously attempt to balance the prices charged to the public with the value offered, while remaining focused on profitability and opportunities to maximize the efficiency of their business agreements.
According to Sony’s executive team, PlayStation Plus serves as one of the company’s most reliable drivers for boosting financial gains.
The Most Expensive Tier: Consists of 40% of all current subscribers, signifying that the brand’s premium tiering strategy has proven successful.
Financial Milestone: The company achieved record-breaking profitability with PlayStation Plus during the 2025 fiscal year.
Future Tiers: Executives shared that future roadmaps may introduce entirely new pricing tiers, though they did not provide extensive details on the matter.
Additionally, the corporation aims to optimize the strategic investments it makes to bring fresh content to the subscription platform.
Physical media phase-out triggers fan boycott
While Sony views PlayStation Plus as a reliable and growing source of revenue, its recent corporate decisions risk reducing its total active subscriber base. In direct response to the company’s decision to phase out physical media, a large number of players have initiated an online boycott of the subscription service across social media networks.
The Community’s Goal
Through this movement, disgruntled players believe they can send a clear message to the company that they are dissatisfied with an all-digital future. However, the report notes that for this initiative to be effective, a massive volume of users will need to sustain the protest and history has shown that consumer boycotts do not always succeed.
Historical precedents and current realities
Sony has previously demonstrated a willingness to reverse controversial decisions when facing severe public pressure. For example, after being heavily criticized for announcing immediate closure plans in 2021, the company ultimately delayed the shutdown of the PS3 and PS Vita digital storefronts by 5 years.
However, the current situation may play out differently. Recent reports from Austrian media show that the corporation has been planning the end of physical PlayStation media for a long time, and has already put plans into motion to overhaul its final dedicated disc-manufacturing factory.
