New PS5 Pro Beta firmware makes PSSR 2.0 default across all games

Sony released a new Beta system update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) on Thursday (6), bringing major changes for PS5 Pro owners. The console’s operating system now applies PSSR 2.0 by default across all titles, including games that have not received specific updates for the newer upscaler version.

Default PSSR 2.0 upscaling and compatibility

By forcing the newer upscaling technology, Sony promises higher native resolutions and improved overall performance for players.

  • Manual Opt-In for Legacy Upscaling: Players can still choose to use the previous upscaler, but must actively select it in the settings.
  • Compatibility Options: The option to disable PSSR 2.0 remains available in select cases to address potential compatibility issues with the PS5 Pro.
  • Addressing Past Feedback: While the original implementation of the upscaler helped improve frame rates, it faced heavy criticism for producing blurry images and visual glitches.

Bluetooth disabling feature and trade-offs

The new firmware also introduces a setting to completely turn off Bluetooth connectivity. However, Sony noted that this feature is restricted to “certain countries and regions” and includes operational limitations.

Disabling Bluetooth requires users to give up two core features:

  • HDMI Link
  • Rest Mode

In exchange, Sony states that turning off Bluetooth simplifies controller and accessory pairing under specific conditions.

Esports focus and Beta availability

The Bluetooth toggle is designed for environments where multiple consoles operate simultaneously. With the PS5 serving as the preferred platform for major tournaments such as EVO, event organizers are expected to find the feature especially useful.

Sony Warning: “Do not use this feature for any other purpose.”

The firmware update is currently available exclusively to selected members of Sony’s Beta program, with no official timeline provided for its general public release.
