Set aboard the reimagined Samsara lunar hotel, the title puts players in control of protagonist Aditi as she investigates a series of disturbing moral experiments.

The ‘Rat Server Experiment’ dilemma

The newly revealed footage highlights one of the complex moral scenarios players will encounter, involving a scientist named Crombie who attempted to build an artificial mind to discover the essence of individuality:

  • Experimental Outcome: Crombie’s psyche was unexpectedly transferred into a server powered by an infestation of interconnected rats.
  • The Conflict: During the encounter, the rat-powered server asks Aditi to reconnect it to Crombie’s physical body, while the body itself reacts and begs her to stop the process.
  • Player Agency: Players must investigate the environment for hidden clues to make their decision. Frictional Games noted there are no right or wrong answers; players can follow instructions, seek alternatives, or sabotage the test entirely based on their own moral interpretation.

SOMA spiritual successor and production details

  • Spiritual Successor to SOMA: Developed by Swedish studio Frictional Games, ONTOS builds upon the studio’s focus on mystery, exploration, and questions surrounding humanity and technology.
  • Starring Cast: The game features Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated actor Stellan Skarsgård.
  • Interactive Gamescom Presence: Attendees at Gamescom 2026 can test a playable version in Hall 10.1, featuring a physical recreation of the “Rat Server Experiment” where visitors interact with booth scientists.

ONTOS is available to add to wishlists on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S ahead of its planned 2027 release.
