Resident Evil 4 Remake mod adds full campaign co-op mode

While Capcom officially updated Resident Evil 4 Remake with The Mercenaries mode and an Ada Wong story expansion that added new content to the franchise, the company never included an official cooperative mode. However, a new community-created mod has now made a full co-op experience possible for PC players.

Developed by a modder known as claybtv and released on Nexus Mods, the Resident Evil 4 Multiplayer mod is currently in its beta stage, allowing two players to experience the entire main campaign together.

How the co-op system works

The mod functions by syncing two separate copies of the game in real time. One player hosts the session and invites the second player into their match. From there, both players share the exact same world state, ensuring all campaign progression and story events remain completely synchronized between both sessions.

  • Character Selection: the primary player controls Leon. The second player can choose from a lineup of alternative characters, including Ashley, Wesker, or a second version of Leon.
  • Progression Restriction: to ensure the game functions properly, both players must be positioned at the same point on the map before they can advance through the environment.
  • In-Game Chat: the mod features an integrated messaging system built directly into the game to allow players to communicate.

Requirements and installation steps

Before attempting to play, users must have two standard tools from the Resident Evil 4 Remake modding community already installed:

  1. Fluffy Mod Manager
  2. REFramework

Setup Process: Once the prerequisites are configured, players need to create an account directly within the mod itself, find a partner to play with, and ensure both players are in the same lobby before proceeding into the campaign.

Current beta limitations

Because the project is currently in a beta phase, players should expect to encounter bugs, unexpected errors, performance drops, and occasional game crashes.

Additionally, a notable current gameplay quirk forces the game to pause for both players whenever either player opens their inventory. The developer notes that this shared-pause mechanic is not intended to happen once the mod is further optimized and improved.
