Riot Games to end active development on 2XKO in December due to low player retention

Riot Games has announced it will end active development on 2XKO, its team-based fighting game set in the League of Legends universe, in December 2026. Despite strong initial interest, the game failed to sustain the player retention necessary for long-term project viability.

Officially launched for PC and consoles in January 2026, the title will see its active development phase conclude before reaching its first anniversary.

Server status and remaining content schedule

  • Continued Server Support: Servers will remain online for online multiplayer after active development ends, and offline modes will remain unaffected. Riot has not set a date for server shut-offs and promised advance notice if that changes.
  • New Roster Additions: Before active development ceases, Riot will release feature improvements, bug fixes, and two new League of Legends champions: Lux and Samira.
  • Final Update: A final bug-fix patch is scheduled to deploy in December 2026.

Patch 1.3.1: Complete Refunds and Unlocked Roster

Scheduled for September 2026, Patch 1.3.1 will introduce sweeping adjustments to the game’s business model:

  • Unlocked Content: All champions will be unlocked for all players, and the majority of cosmetic items will be bundled together. Avatar and profile items can be unlocked using Credits.
  • Full Monetaion Refunds: Players will receive refunds for all money spent on 2XKO up to August 20, 2026.
  • Account Retention: Players will retain all content currently owned on their accounts.

Console launch issues and esports reception

2XKO faced a turbulent lifecycle prior to the announcement. The title suffered performance issues during its console launch, and Riot executed staff cuts on the project team shortly before its release.

Riot’s initial strategy involved building a core community among dedicated fighting game players before expanding its user base through post-launch features—a plan cut short by low retention numbers. However, the game achieved notable traction in the high-level competitive fighting game scene, participating in several major tournaments and appearing on the main stage at EVO 2026.
