Technical performance and map scale

  • 30 FPS Console Target: Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson confirmed that all consoles, including the PS5 Pro, run the game at 30 FPS. The preview footage was captured on a standard PS5.
  • 80+ Hour Campaign: The single-player story campaign exceeds 80 hours for main story objectives.
  • Expanded Map: Set in Leonida, the playable world is three times larger than that of Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Navigation: The minimap features 3D building models. Police officers no longer appear on the radar, requiring players to utilize a dedicated “focus” mechanic to locate them.

Protagonists and dynamic romance system

Rockstar initially considered using four protagonists before choosing the dual lead structure of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos:

  • Instant Switching: Character switching is instantaneous when Jason and Lucia are near each other, taking a few seconds when separated by longer distances.
  • Dynamic Relationship: The romantic bond between Jason and Lucia is driven by player choices and shared activities, such as playing pool, mini-golf, kayaking, or holding up stores. Players can also opt to maintain a purely platonic partnership.
  • Domestic & Social Features: Characters can hold hands (using R2), shop together, send text messages when separated, and watch TV at their animal-print-decorated hideout (featuring commercials for Angstipan and the 30,000-calorie Prairie Sandwich).

Wanted system, NPC interaction, and mechanics

  • 6-Star Wanted System: Crimes require a witness or an alarm to be reported. Icons display whether law enforcement recognizes the character’s face, clothing, weapon, or vehicle. Escaping on foot into alleys is prioritized in dense urban environments.
  • Evolved NPC Dialogue: Activated via the left trigger, contextual interactions allow non-binary communication. A dedicated Los Angeles-based writing team created dynamic NPC responses to eavesdropping or standing too close.
  • Criminal Profile & Karma: A Karma system awards positive or negative alignment (e.g., petting a dog vs. fleeing a robbery), while the Criminal Profile tracks illegal activity as a spiritual successor to RDR2’s Honor system.
  • Returning Stats: Weight and muscle attributes return for the first time since GTA: San Andreas.
  • Vehicle Theft: High-end vehicles require specialized tools and the phone-based Waink app scanner, which checks locks, alarms, trackers, resale value, and registration costs.
