RuneScape: Dragonwilds overhauls agility skill in major early access update

Jagex released Update 0.12.1 for RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Wednesday (29), marking one of the largest revisions to the game during its early access period. The update features a complete overhaul of the Agility skill, alongside new courses, spells, shortcuts, combat adjustments, and quality-of-life enhancements.

Agility courses and online leaderboards

The centerpiece of the update is the expansion of the Agility skill, introducing six new permanent courses placed throughout the map. Each course features online leaderboards tracking the community’s fastest times.

Players who earn a Gold Medal time unlock exclusive rewards:

  • Collectible gold medals
  • Gold versions of regional capes
  • Recognition on each course’s rankings

Dynamic movement and skill spells

Update 0.12.1 introduces several mechanics designed to make movement smoother and reduce penalties on rough terrain:

  • Horizontal Dash: Usable during double jumps, with a second dash unlocked at higher levels.
  • Passive Experience: Earned simply by sprinting across the map.
  • Fall Cushioning: A new animation for non-fatal falls that lets the character roll and keep moving.

Spell overhaul & shortcuts

  • Windstep Spell: Previously tied to Runecrafting, Windstep has been moved to the Agility skill tree. As it levels up, it gains new effects, such as generating a shockwave upon landing from high jumps.
  • Kebbit Burrows: Hidden tunnels that players can dig during exploration to serve as shortcuts between different regions of the map.

Agility skill progression benefits

Levelling up Agility now awards permanent passive perks to the character:

  • Higher vertical jumps and improved mid-air movement control
  • Reduced fall damage
  • Lower energy consumption while sprinting
  • Gradual increases to carrying capacity

Combat and equipment improvements

Beyond Agility, Update 0.12.1 introduces refinements across several core gameplay systems:

  • Faster Blocking: Faster response times when blocking incoming attacks.
  • Combat Tweaks: Refinements to damage anticipation, improved ammo swapping, and reduced movement speed while casting certain spells.
  • Mystic Forge: Now allows players to upgrade Masterwork items and weapons to higher tiers.

Built on community feedback

According to Jagex, a significant portion of the changes in Update 0.12.1 stemmed directly from player feedback collected during early access, with the Agility skill being one of the most frequently requested overhauls. The update continues to expand the game’s mobility, combat, and survival-crafting systems ahead of its full release.
