SEGA Universe initiative aims to revive classic franchises beyond gaming

SEGA has announced the “SEGA Universe” label, a strategic move designed to celebrate its rich catalog of classic titles that often lack modern spotlight. The initiative aims to offer fans new ways to engage with beloved IPs, transcending traditional gaming boundaries.

The company stated that the first phase of this initiative will focus on “Anniversary Projects” for games reaching major milestones in 2026. These projects are intended to deliver “nostalgic yet fresh” entertainment content.

Celebrated titles and milestones in 2026

While specific project details remain under wraps, the official SEGA Universe portal lists several legendary franchises scheduled for celebration this year:

  • Fantasy Zone & Out Run – 40th Anniversary
  • Streets of Rage & Rent a Hero – 35th Anniversary
  • Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS Into Dreams, Dynamite Deka, & Sakura Wars – 30th Anniversary
  • SGGG (Segagaga) – 25th Anniversary

Expansion beyond the screen

The mission of SEGA Universe is to allow characters and games to “live in the same universe” across multiple media. According to the official site, the expansion will reach:

  • Movies and Music
  • Fashion and Lifestyle
  • Other Entertainment Forms

Recent franchise momentum

This initiative follows SEGA’s recent aggressive push to revitalize its classic portfolio. A new entry in the Streets of Rage series was announced recently, alongside new chapters for Crazy Taxi and Golden Axe. The Shinobi franchise has already seen a modern release in the form of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance.

Furthermore, in 2025, SEGA confirmed development on an Out Run film, set to be directed by Michael Bay with Sydney Sweeney joining the production team. As 2026 approaches its second half, fans are eagerly waiting to see what other surprises the SEGA Universe banner will unveil.
