Stranger Than Heaven locks in January 2027 release, shockingly featuring Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) delivered one of the most surreal and jaw-dropping announcements of Summer Game Fest 2026. The next mainline entry set within the Yakuza / Like a Dragon universe, titled Stranger Than Heaven, will officially launch on January 15, 2027. In a historic first for the franchise, the game will feature virtual likenesses of American hip-hop legends Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur.

The upcoming title will be available on current-generation consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S) and PC.

East meets West in 1960s Kamurocho

RGG Studio has built a decades-long reputation for scanning famous Japanese and Asian actors, musicians, and athletes into their games. However, under the ambitious direction of Studio Head Masayoshi Yokoyama, Stranger Than Heaven is expanding its star-studded casting calls to the Western music industry.

The game is set in a 1960s iteration of Kamurocho, exploring the foundational eras of the Japanese criminal underworld.

  • The Hip-Hop Icons: The digital likenesses of Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur will play prominent roles in Kamurocho’s criminal ecosystem. While their exact character bios are being kept under wraps, they are heavily integrated into the main narrative.
  • A Diverse Ensemble: The American rap icons join an already eclectic scanned cast, which includes popular modern Japanese singer Ado and a digital reconstruction of the legendary, late Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara.

The Tojo Clan foundations?

Because the game takes place decades before the adventures of Kazuma Kiryu or Ichiban Kasuga, the 1960s setting has opened the floodgates for massive lore speculation.

Fan theories suggest that Stranger Than Heaven will chronicle the chaotic foundation of the Tojo Clan. With the timeline pushed so far back, players are eager to see if younger, raw versions of franchise icons will make surprise appearances alongside the newly announced American cast.

Launch details at a glance

  • Release Date: January 15, 2027
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam / Windows)
  • Developer / Publisher: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio / SEGA

With a concrete winter release date locked in, Western and Eastern fans alike are buckle-up for what is shaping up to be RGG Studio’s most experimental, historically ambitious narrative to date.
