Developer 11 bit studios has announced that The Alters: Last Variable, the first expansion for The Alters, will be released on July 13, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The upcoming content introduces a brand-new campaign lasting approximately 20 hours, significantly expanding the story and survival mechanics of the base game.
'The Alters' expansion
The expansion follows a new phase in the journey of Jan Scientist, deepening the sci-fi universe that previously earned The Alters the award for Best Strategy/Simulation Game at the DICE Awards, as well as a BAFTA nomination for Best Narrative.
In Last Variable, years have passed since Jan Scientist decided to remain on the planet following the events of the main campaign.
Now, his mission is to unravel the mystery of the Oasis, but he soon realizes he cannot accomplish this goal alone. To progress, he creates new versions of himself, known as Alters, with each one specializing in a specific field of knowledge:
Geologist
Biologist
Chemist
Physicist
Each Alter possesses specific abilities that will be fundamental to solving the scientific challenges encountered throughout the expansion.
Terraforming and planet reactions
One of the headline features of Last Variable is the ability to alter the planet itself. Players can terraform arid regions, extract entirely new resources, and develop technologies capable of making specific areas completely habitable.
Environmental Backlash: As exploration advances, the planet reacts more aggressively. Players will face an increased frequency of environmental hazards that threaten survival, including earthquakes, radiation storms, and other harsh phenomena.
Subterranean base upgrades and field labs
The expansion expands the building and management mechanics of the player’s base by introducing new construction terrains, unreleased modules, and additional research technologies.
Cryogenics Chamber: A standout new structure that allows players to extend the time available for research and track the long-term effects of scientific experiments.
Field Laboratories: This new feature opens a fresh window of exploration after each planetary cooling cycle. During these periods, the Alters can continue conducting research on the surface while Jan remains in cryo-sleep, accelerating tech development.
Internal conflicts shape the narrative
Beyond pure survival, the expansion doubles down on the narrative complexity of The Alters. Because each version of Jan firmly believes they possess the superior scientific approach to solving the team’s problems, internal conflicts will arise.
Throughout the campaign, players must carefully balance these conflicting viewpoints while deciding which research paths to prioritize and navigating the consequences of each discovery.
