The Witcher 3 Remastered described as 2.0 overhaul by CD Projekt RED ahead of September 29 launch

CD Projekt RED has revealed that The Witcher 3 Remastered, launching on September 29, is being developed as a major “2.0 revision” rather than a simple visual update, specifically targeting core gameplay adjustments.

Gameplay overhaul and technical improvements

Speaking to Kotaku, Associate Director Pawel Sasko explained that working on Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.0 update inspired the studio to address the game’s most criticized and outdated element: its gameplay.

Key additions and updates include:

  • Gameplay & Combat Systems: Updated mounting mechanics, new finisher moves, and an adjusted Photo Mode.
  • Technical & QoL Upgrades: New textures, a modernized tutorial, and mod support across all platforms.
  • Preparation for DLC: Lays the foundation for the upcoming Songs of the Past DLC, which will bring further quality-of-life mechanics, including the ability to use chains as weapons.

Free upgrade, save progress, and included expansions

Unlike the previous PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC release—which focused strictly on visual and technical enhancements—The Witcher 3 Remastered focuses on fan feedback and offers several benefits to existing players:

  • Free Upgrade Path: Available as a free upgrade for owners of the original game (with the exception of the Songs of the Past DLC).
  • Expansions Included: The free upgrade provides full access to both the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions.
  • Save Compatibility & Trophies: Fully supports previous save files without requiring players to restart, while also allowing synchronization of all previously unlocked trophies.
