Until Dawn 2 officially revealed for 2027 with Dacre Montgomery and Neil Newbon leading the cast

More than a decade after the original cult-classic horror hit redefined interactive storytelling, Supermassive Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment have officially announced Until Dawn 2. Revealed with a cinematic trailer during the June 2 PlayStation State of Play, the sequel introduces a star-studded new cast and a massive shift in setting.

While the game proudly carries the Until Dawn 2 moniker, the developers confirmed it is a completely standalone experience. The sequel moves away from the snowy, isolated Blackwood Mountain and the original group of teenagers, trading the frost for a deceptive tropical nightmare.

The plot: when clout-chasing goes horribly wrong

The sequel centers around modern internet culture, following a team of ambitious content creators who run a massively successful paranormal investigation channel called Dead True.

According to the official synopsis, the team has built an empire on fabricated scares:

“The cast this time is a team of ghost hunters, the faces behind the hugely successful paranormal channel, Dead True… Except, well… they’ve never actually seen anything truly supernatural. The scares they are known for are, shall we say, a bit staged. But all of that changes when, for the first time, they run into real horrors and must start living up to their reputation to survive until dawn.”

A star-studded horror cast

Supermassive Games is continuing its tradition of bringing high-profile Hollywood and gaming talent into the motion-capture booth. The initial cast reveal includes:

  • Dacre Montgomery: Best known for his explosive role as Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things.
  • Neil Newbon: The beloved, award-winning voice and performance actor behind Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Karl Heisenberg in Resident Evil Village.
  • Peter Stormare: In a surprising tether to the original universe, Stormare officially returns to reprise his role as the deeply unsettling and enigmatic Dr. Hill, presumably anchoring the game’s psychological interludes between chapters.

Classic high-stakes gameplay mechanics

True to the franchise’s DNA, Until Dawn 2 is built entirely around branching narratives, split-second quick-time events (QTEs), and the unpredictable consequences of the Butterfly Effect.

The developers have reiterated that player agency is absolute. Every single choice can drastically alter the story, meaning every character can survive the night or every single one of them can brutally die before the sun comes up.

The studio promises to share deeper insights into the gameplay mechanics, the tropical island’s specific lore, and the remaining unannounced cast members in the coming months. Until Dawn 2 is scheduled to launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5 and PC in 2027.

Although Take-Two Interactive has already set the price of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) at $80, some market analysts are openly dissatisfied with the decision. Among them is Ben Thompson, author of the Stratechery newsletter, who argues that the publisher missed a golden opportunity to charge up to $200 for what he considers "the last great game" in history.
