Xbox takes over publishing for Hideo Kojima’s Physint following PlayStation cancellation

Playstation has dropped its partnership for Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage title Physint, which will now be funded and published by Xbox. While Sony Interactive Entertainment claimed the separation was a mutual decision, Kojima revealed that PlayStation cancelled the project in June without prior notice and against his personal wishes.

Conflicting statements on the cancellation

  • PlayStation’s Official Stance: PlayStation stated on X that “after careful consideration,” the companies agreed to end their collaboration by mutual consent, adding that Sony maintains admiration for Kojima’s vision and looks forward to future collaborations.
  • Kojima’s Clarification: Kojima clarified on his personal profile that the breakup was not mutual, explaining that Sony cancelled Physint unannounced in June. Kojima spent the following three months seeking new partners before finalizing a deal with Xbox, citing a shared vision for the project’s future.

Project vision and expanded Xbox partnership

  • Hybrid Game-Movie Concept: Kojima described Physint as a genre-defining action-espionage title. While sharing a similar premise to his earlier work on Metal Gear with Konami, Kojima stated Physint will go further by seamlessly blending elements of video games and cinema.
  • Existing Xbox Collaboration: Physint marks the second project between Kojima Productions and Xbox alongside the horror title OD, which Xbox executive Asha Sharma kept intact during the brand’s major operational reset in early 2026.
  • Cross-Media Expansion: Writing on Xbox Wire, Sharma stated she is honored to work on Physint, adding that Xbox’s collaboration with Kojima Productions extends beyond video games to include story creation for film and television.
