Xbox’s Asha Sharma to join federal reserve task force on productivity and employment

Asha Sharma, the leader of the Xbox division, has been appointed to a Federal Reserve (FED) task force responsible for evaluating how artificial intelligence (AI) will impact the future of jobs. The announcement comes during the same week she disclosed 3,200 layoffs within the Xbox division.

With this appointment, the executive becomes one of those tasked with helping shape the direction of employment and productivity policies in the United States.

The productivity and Labor Group

According to a press release, the FED confirmed that Sharma is joining one of its five new independent task forces. Specifically, she will serve on the Productivity and Labor group.

  • Core Objective: Determine the economic impacts of emerging technologies like AI.
  • Leaning: Given Sharma’s historical track record of promoting this sector, it is anticipated that many of her conclusions will be favorable toward the technology.

Task Force Composition

Aside from the Xbox chief, the task force is comprised of prominent figures with significant interests in the growth of the AI market:

  • Marc Andreessen: Co-founder and partner of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
  • Charles I. Jones: An economics professor from Stanford University who is currently on leave to work at the AI safety and research company Anthropic.

🇺🇸 Shaping United States Economic Policy

The FED stated that these new task forces are designed to assist in defining new economic policies for the United States, with a core focus on ensuring price stability and maximizing employment opportunities.

“The United States economy has changed significantly in the last generation, and never more so than now,” explained Kevin Warsh, the president of the institution. “Each task force will carefully assess whether the means and methods, analytical tools, and public policy approaches of policymakers can be enhanced.”

Divided responsibilities and Xbox’s new strategy

It remains unclear exactly how much dedication the current Xbox leader will be able to provide to this new federal role given her current corporate responsibilities.

Internal Xbox Restructuring

  • Direct Management: Amid recent corporate shakeups, Sharma revealed that she will begin working more directly with the teams at Mojang and King, both of which are considered essential to the future of the Xbox brand.
  • Franchise Realignment: Xbox has promised to focus its efforts more tightly on consolidated, established franchises while putting aside some of the experimental projects produced in recent years.
  • Main Targets: Established series like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are set to receive even greater focus ahead, even though the executive’s recent decisions have not heavily contributed to accelerating the production of new chapters for these franchises.
