Sucker Punch Productions has confirmed that Ghost of Yotei, the next chapter in their open-world action series, will include a dedicated multiplayer component. Following the success of the “Legends” mode in the first game, the studio is bringing back the cooperative format to accompany the journey of the new protagonist, Atsu.
While the main campaign of Ghost of Yotei focuses on a single-player experience set in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei in 1603, the developers revealed that a multiplayer mode is being built as a core part of the package. According to the studio, the goal is to offer a cooperative experience that complements the new setting and mechanics introduced in the sequel.
Key details from the announcement:
Cooperative Focus: The mode will remain focused on online cooperation, allowing players to team up to face supernatural threats and waves of enemies inspired by Japanese folklore.
Stand-Alone and Integrated: Like its predecessor, the multiplayer mode will be integrated into the main game but is also expected to be available as a separate experience for those primarily interested in the online component.
New Setting Integration: Although specific classes have not been fully detailed yet, the multiplayer maps will be based on the snowy and atmospheric environments of the Ezo region (modern-day Hokkaido) seen in the campaign.
Launch and development
Sucker Punch emphasized that the lessons learned from the first Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which received several free updates and a standalone releasem are being applied to ensure a robust launch. The multiplayer mode is scheduled to be available at the game’s release in 2025.
Further details regarding specific classes, progression systems, and potential cross-play features are expected to be shared in the coming months as the game approaches its launch window on the PlayStation 5.
