League of Legends update introduces Shyvana rework with expanded draconic abilities

Riot Games has finally unveiled the comprehensive gameplay update for Shyvana, giving the Half-Dragon a modern kit that emphasizes her dual nature as a human warrior and a colossal dragon.

After months of anticipation, the latest League of Legends patch has officially introduced the long-awaited Shyvana Rework. The update aims to solve the champion’s historical struggle with identity, shifting her from a “stat-check” diver to a more dynamic fighter with distinct tactical choices in both forms.

A true half-dragon fantasy

The core of the rework lies in the increased complexity of her abilities. While her previous kit felt repetitive, the new Shyvana features draconic-enhanced abilities that significantly change how she interacts with the battlefield.

  • Twin Bite (Q): Now grants a brief dash in human form. In dragon form, it creates a shockwave that deals area-of-effect (AoE) damage and applies on-hit effects to all enemies hit.
  • Burnout (W): Beyond the trail of fire, the ability now grants scaling damage reduction based on her Fury. In dragon form, the radius is vastly increased, and enemies are slowed while standing in the flames.
  • Flame Breath (E): The projectile now marks enemies, allowing Shyvana to deal bonus health-based damage. In dragon form, the explosion leaves a “Scorched Earth” zone that persists longer and reduces enemy armor.

The new ultimate: dragon’s descent

Shyvana’s Ultimate has been reimagined to feel like a true boss encounter. Upon transforming, Shyvana now lets out a Terrifying Roar that briefly fears nearby enemies. Furthermore, her fury no longer just dictates the duration of the form; she can now consume large amounts of Fury to unleash a “Signature Breath” attack, similar to her cinematic appearances.

Visual and narrative update

Alongside the gameplay changes, Shyvana received a complete Visual and Sustainability Update (ASU). Her model has been rebuilt from the ground up to reflect modern Runeterra standards, especially her ties to Demacia and her draconic lineage. Her voice lines have also been expanded, featuring new interactions with champions like Jarvan IV, Vayne, and Aurelion Sol.

Developer insights

According to the balance team at Riot Games, the goal was to make Shyvana a viable pick in both the Jungle and Top Lane. “We wanted her to feel like an unstoppable force when she transforms,” said one developer. “Players should feel the weight of a dragon entering the fray, not just a bigger version of the human model.”

The Shyvana rework is now live on all servers, accompanied by a special “Dragon’s Quest” event and updated splashes for her classic skins, including Ice Drake and Championship Shyvana.
