In Saros, players step into the boots of Arjun, an enforcer tasked with investigating the mysterious disappearance of a human colony. True to the studio’s lineage, the game is built on a cycle of death and resurrection, where every failure sends Arjun back to his team’s base to gear up for another attempt.
The planet is described as a mix of haunting beauty and lethal environments.
Dynamic Layouts: While the environmental assets are handcrafted, the game utilizes procedural organization to ensure that no two runs are identical.
Diverse Biomes: Players will navigate fragmented heights and ancestral depths, eventually facing off against massive, challenging bosses.
Exploration: Beyond the main objectives, the game features secondary routes, reflex-based puzzles, and a comprehensive skill tree to reward those who venture off the beaten path.
Combat mechanics: the “eclipse” and beyond
Housemarque is leaning heavily into its “bullet hell” roots, combining high-speed projectile dodging with tactical decision-making.
The Arsenal: Players have access to an array of pistols, rifles, and shotguns, all utilizing the PS5’s adaptive triggers for primary and alternative fire modes.
Energy Absorption: A standout feature allows players to use their shields to absorb incoming enemy fire, converting that danger into energy for devastating special attacks.
The Eclipse System: This optional, high-risk mechanic allows players to manually trigger an “Eclipse.” This event mutates enemies and alters the environment’s visuals and audio, making the game significantly harder but offering much more valuable rewards.
A new approach to storytelling
Moving away from the isolated narratives of past titles, Saros focuses on collective horror and psychological tension.
The Crew: Arjun isn’t alone; he interacts with a rescue mission crew and an AI named “Principal.”
Environmental Lore: The story is pieced together through logs left behind by the vanished colonists.
Internal Conflict: The narrative emphasizes the deteriorating relationships and mental strain within the rescue team, heightening the sense of cosmic dread.
