Klei Entertainment has revealed Don’t Starve Elsewhere, a new multiplayer entry in its acclaimed survival series. The title was unveiled during the latest Triple-i Initiative Showcase, promising a major structural shift for the franchise.

For the first time since the series’ debut in 2013, Klei is moving away from strictly flat plains. Don’t Starve Elsewhere introduces 3D terrain with vertical elevation, meaning resource gathering, sanity management, and movement will now involve navigating mountains, cliffs, and plateaus.
The Canadian studio describes the environment as a multi-level wilderness. Players can now:
Navigate Waterways: Swim in abundant rivers and cross choppy seas.
Complex Undergrounds: Delve into intricate cave systems.
Vertical Hazards: The rugged terrain introduces new dangers, including hostile fauna such as “unfriendly” mountain goats.
This release marks the third main installment in the series. It arrives ten years after the second major entry, Don’t Starve Together (2016), and over a decade after the 2013 original that established the franchise’s signature Edward Gorey and Tim Burton-inspired aesthetic.
Native features and dynamic biomes
Unlike previous entries where certain mechanics were added via DLC, Don’t Starve Elsewhere incorporates several features as native elements from the start:
Integrated Multiplayer: Built-in support for multiple players, a core feature of Don’t Starve Together.
Dynamic Weather: Weather patterns previously seen in the Shipwrecked expansion are now native to the base game.
New Biomes: Procedurally generated regions include redwood forests subject to continuous storms and snow-capped peaks.
The Cursed Fog: A new phenomenon that moves across the landscape, forcing players to choose between fleeing or risking their character’s sanity to uncover its secrets.
Legacy and development status
Klei has confirmed that the game will feature entirely new animals, enemies, and bosses. While the studio has a 13-year history of supporting the franchise through paid expansions, it is also noted that the mobile spin-off, Don’t Starve: Newhome (announced in 2020 by Tencent), remains in active production.
Launch Details:
Release Date: Not yet disclosed.
Platforms: Only Steam has been mentioned so far.
Strategy: While not officially confirmed, the studio is expected to follow its traditional model of launching in Early Access on PC before a full release on other platforms, similar to Oxygen Not Included.
