Dragon’s Dogma 2 update fuels rumors of a new expansion

Just weeks after Capcom sparked fan interest with a commemorative anniversary image, new evidence suggests that Dragon’s Dogma 2 may soon receive a major update. Recent backend activity on Steam reveals that the company is testing an update that increases the game’s total size by 12 GB.

As noted by fans on Reddit, the Japanese publisher recently added a new repository for the title with a total size of 77 GB. While these files were quickly removed from Valve’s store, replaced shortly after by minor updates of 115 KB and 291 KB, the data did not go unnoticed.

Given that Dragon’s Dogma 2 currently occupies 65 GB, the 12 GB discrepancy has led to widespread suspicion that Capcom is internally testing a new version of the open-world RPG. This potential update could include a long-awaited expansion, breathing new life into the title more than two years after its original launch.

What is known about a possible expansion?

As of now, Capcom has made no official comments regarding the future of the game or any upcoming updates. Before the recent anniversary message, the company’s last public statement on the title was in November 2025, when the game reached the milestone of 4 million players.

Historical context for the title includes:

  • Scarce Updates: The last major technical update occurred in April 2025.
  • Ongoing Issues: Since its debut, the game has struggled with performance problems similar to those of Monster Hunter Wilds, which have never been fully resolved.
  • Director’s Departure: A significant hurdle for future content is the loss of director Hideaki Itsuno, who left Capcom in late 2024 to join Tencent for an unannounced action project.

Hope based on the franchise’s history

Despite these challenges, many fans remain optimistic due to the series’ history. The first Dragon’s Dogma received a massive expansion titled Dark Arisen, which did not just add new areas but also fundamentally rebalanced the original adventure. The recent Steam movements have convinced many that a similar revitalization could be in the works for the sequel.
