Next God of War may feature a blend of multiple mythologies

Following its deep dives into Greek and Norse legends, the God of War series is reportedly preparing to mix elements from several different cultures in its next chapter.

According to the website MP1ST, Sony Santa Monica is working on an unannounced project that draws inspiration and items from various world mythologies rather than sticking to a single setting.

A multilingual world of myth

Sources suggest the upcoming game will feature:

  • Diverse Influences: Elements from Mayan culture, as well as Chinese and Japanese mythologies.
  • Flexible Development: Insiders note that while these elements are currently in development, they are not yet “cemented” and could be adjusted or removed before the final release.
  • Established Seeds: The report highlights that the seeds for this global expansion were already planted during the events of the 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarök.

Rumors: a prequel starring Faye

Further leaks indicate that this new entry will be a prequel focusing on Faye as the main protagonist.

  • The Lead: Previously a secondary but pivotal figure, Faye is the mother of Atreus and Kratos’ late wife.
  • Supporting Cast: The Norse god of war, Týr, is also expected to appear. This aligns with his role in the recent games, where his collection of trophies already showcased artifacts from the various cultures he encountered during his travels.
  • Kratos’ Return: Despite the shift in focus, reports suggest Christopher Judge will return as Kratos. The game could be officially revealed as early as this month during a rumored State of Play digital broadcast.

The God of War trilogy remake

Parallel to this new project, Sony Santa Monica reportedly has a team dedicated to a remake of the original Greek trilogy.

  • Preserving the Past: While details are scarce, early reports suggest the developers may retain the controversial sexual minigames of the original titles rather than removing them for the new version.
  • Sons of Sparta: This news follows the recent “shadow drop” of God of War: Sons of Sparta, a side-scrolling spin-off that has kept the franchise in the spotlight while fans await a mainline announcement.
