Starfield launch on PS5 marred by crashes, players demand refunds

The long-awaited debut of Starfield on PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been described by players as a disaster. Following its April 7 release, the Bethesda space RPG has been plagued by severe bugs and frequent crashes.

Frustrated buyers have taken to platforms like Reddit to report an experience that many claim is “unplayable.” One of the most popular threads, titled “PS5 base crashes are getting out of hand,” highlights users experiencing crashes as frequently as every five minutes. In response, players are organizing to demand refunds through the PlayStation Store.

Stability issues across hardware

Reports indicate that the instability affects both the base PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Common complaints include:

  • System Freezes: The game frequently freezes without warning, forcing players to manually close the application.
  • Auto-Close Errors: The game often shuts down entirely, making story progression impossible.
  • Failed Workarounds: While some users suggested disabling the auto-save system, the issue persists for most. Others reported that attempting to reinstall the game made the situation worse, leaving the title unable to launch at all.

Absence of official fixes

As of now, Bethesda has not commented on the technical failures. Notably, the “Day 1 Patch” failed to resolve these issues. While the developer is known for bugs in its massive open-world titles, many fans argue that the current state of the PS5 version is unprecedented in its severity.

Simultaneous updates on other platforms

On the same day as the PS5 launch, Starfield received the “Free Lanes” update on PC and Xbox Series X|S (where the game has been available since 2023). Additionally, Bethesda released the “Terran Armada” DLC, which introduces new characters, enemies, locations, and rewards to the main narrative.
