Following the surprise announcement of Songs of the Past, CD Projekt RED co-CEO Michał Nowakowski shared key details during a recent Q1 2026 earnings call. The studio confirmed that the 2027 expansion will be a massive, full-scale narrative addition mirroring the scope of the game’s most celebrated content.
The Witcher 3: "Songs of the Past"
According to Nowakowski, the new storyline will match the sheer size and depth of 2016’s Blood and Wine. For context, a standard playthrough of the Toussaint-based expansion easily demands 30 to 40 hours of gameplay.
The co-CEO also made a point to clarify industry terminology, emphasizing that Songs of the Past is strictly an expansion, not a DLC. In CDPR’s philosophy, “DLCs” refer to minor, free cosmetic or quality-of-life drops, whereas “expansions” represent substantial, premium chunks of new content.
The executive confirmed rumors that the project was originally greenlit for a late 2026 release window. However, as development progressed, the team realized they needed until 2027 to fully realize their ambitions. Fans won’t have to wait until next year for a first look, though—CDPR confirmed the expansion will be officially showcased at Gamescom 2026 this August.
Surprise content dropping later this year
In a surprising twist, Songs of the Past may not be the only thing cooking for the 2015 RPG masterpiece. Nowakowski revealed that the studio is working on multiple unannounced pieces of content concurrently:
“We obviously also have some other content in an advanced stage of production. And while they certainly do not have the same scale as a major expansion, we plan to release them this year.”
While he did not specify what these drops entail, industry analysts speculate this likely includes the built-in console mod support system that CDPR originally promised back in September 2025 but has remained silent on since.
Platform restrictions: leaving last-gen behind
While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has crossed a monumental milestone of 65 million units sold globally across virtually every modern platform, CDPR is officially drawing a line in the sand for its technical future:
Next-Gen Only:Songs of the Past will release exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Sunset Platforms: The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game will not receive the expansion or the upcoming system requirement overhauls.
