Original Guitar Hero Team announces ‘Stage Tour’ as spiritual successor to rhythm classics

Developed by the revived RedOctane Games, the new title aims to reignite the “plastic instrument” era with modern technology and deep community integration.

The developers behind the original Guitar Hero franchise have officially revealed their next major project: Stage Tour. Set for a late 2026 release, the game is being hailed as the spiritual successor fans have been waiting for since the genre’s hiatus over a decade ago.

A love letter to rhythm games

Simon Ebejer, head of the revived RedOctane Games, described Stage Tour as a “love letter to rhythm games.” The project seeks to blend the nostalgic “note-highway” gameplay that defined the early 2000s with modern innovations designed for a new generation of players.

“We want it to feel familiar and authentic, but also fresh,” RedOctane Games stated. “We are using modern technology to connect gamers with the music they love while building a platform that evolves over time.”

Key features and modern innovations

Unlike its predecessors, Stage Tour is designed as a long-term live-service platform rather than a standalone release. Key highlights include:

  • Enhanced Instrumentation: A partnership with Gibson will bring iconic brands like Epiphone and Kramer into the game as digital and physical peripherals.
  • Expanded Gameplay: Support for four-player bands including guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.
  • Modern Controls: While it supports classic plastic controllers, the game is also optimized for PC keyboards and standard gamepads with an auto-adjusting difficulty system.
  • Live Events: A robust roadmap featuring seasonal content, real-time events, and deep competitive leaderboards.

Overcoming the “plastic” hurdle

The biggest challenge for Stage Tour will be convincing players to reinvest in physical peripherals. To address this, RedOctane plans to sell hardware bundles that include digital game codes. The developers believe that the current wave of nostalgia, combined with the technical depth of their new scoring system, will attract both veterans and newcomers.

Launch window

Stage Tour is scheduled to enter a closed alpha phase in mid-2026, with a full launch expected for PC and consoles in the second half of 2026.
