Since its debut in 2018, the first Graveyard Keeper has sold millions of copies by blending cemetery management with retro aesthetics and life-sim mechanics. Now, eight years later, the sequel aims to drastically expand that foundation.

What’s new in the sequel

Graveyard Keeper 2 moves beyond simple cemetery management. Instead of just tending to graves, the player takes command of a small town besieged by a zombie invasion.

  • The Inquisitor Role: Developer Lazy Bear Games describes the player’s new role as an inquisitor who leads armies of the undead into battle against a spreading threat.
  • Expanded Combat: While the first game featured only occasional combat, the sequel incorporates full-scale warfare systems, including the construction of towers, fortifications, and the crafting of armor to defend the city.
  • Familiar Activities: Core mechanics such as fishing, logging, and decorating the graveyard remain central to the experience.

Scaling up zombie automation

The ability to use reanimated corpses to automate repetitive tasks, a fan-favorite feature from the original, returns with much greater complexity.

  • The Laboratory: The announcement trailer reveals an underground lab where zombies power treadmills to generate energy for workstations.
  • Conveyor Systems: Resources are transported via conveyor belts to crafting benches, where items are automatically assembled to supply the city’s infrastructure.
  • Scalable Operations: The goal is to allow players to transform local manual labor into a profitable, scalable operation where zombie workers handle the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

Legacy of the original game

Launched in 2018, the original Graveyard Keeper set itself apart from other simulators with its dark tone and acidic humor. Players often faced a slow start until unlocking the ability to reanimate zombies for mining, logging, and transport.

The title is known for offering minimal tutorial guidance, making community wikis a common resource for new players. Despite the steep learning curve, its unique “cozy-yet-macabre” theme established it as a reference point in the genre.
