New PC game turns unplayed Steam purchases into villains

If you’ve been using Steam for a while, chances are you’ve built up a massive “backlog” thanks to those irresistible seasonal sales. Now, a new indie title called Game Quest: The Backlog Battler is turning that digital hoarding into a literal fight for survival.

The concept: your “pile of shame” strikes back

Developed by Nic Taylor, this arcade hack-and-slash answers a question every gamer has joked about: What if the games you bought and ignored decided to seek revenge? The game uses the Steam API to scan your personal library and generate custom enemies based on your actual data.

  • Enemy Criteria: Any game in your library with less than two hours of playtime is manifested as an adversary (visually represented as floppy disks).
  • Financial Damage: The threat level is tied directly to your wallet. As the creator puts it: “The more you paid, the more damage they deal, just like in real life.”
  • Critical Hazards: If a game in your backlog has a high Metacritic score, it gains special abilities like flight, making it a much more dangerous airborne threat.

Allied firepower: your favorite time-sink

It’s not all punishment, though. The games you’ve actually spent the most time playing transform into allies that support you in battle. Armed with a weaponized keyboard and mouse, you must fight through waves of your own consumer guilt. To enable this personalized experience, players must set their Steam library visibility to Public.

Launch and availability

  • Release Window: The game is slated to hit Steam Early Access in late 2026.
  • Try the Demo: A free demo is already available on Steam, allowing you to see exactly how much damage that “Ultimate Edition” you never touched will do to your health bar.
